What is a boat's power-to-weight ratio?

Power-to-weight ratio is the engine horsepower divided by the boat's total loaded weight, usually expressed as HP per tonne. It's the single best predictor of how a boat will perform — whether it will plane, how quickly it gets there, and how it handles a load. Two boats with the same engine can behave completely differently if one weighs twice as much.

How to calculate it

Power-to-weight (HP/tonne) = Engine HP ÷ Loaded weight in tonnes
